Hair Loss: Looking Beyond “It Runs in the Family”

"I am not my hair!!"....as India Arie once sang.

But let’s be honest… our hair matters to us.

Hair is deeply personal. It can influence confidence, identity, aging, and how we feel when we look in the mirror. When hair starts thinning, shedding excessively, breaking, or simply not feeling like itself anymore, it can create real distress.

Over the past year and a half, I’ve had the privilege of partnering with Nutrafol and consulting with individuals navigating hair loss. That experience has challenged me to think critically about every possible contributor to hair thinning and shedding because hair issues rarely exist in isolation!

One of the biggest misconceptions I encounter is the belief that hair loss is “just genetic” or simply a cosmetic concern. In reality, hair often reflects what is happening beneath the surface.

Hair is a reflection of the terrain it grows from.

So what are some of the biggest root causes of hair thinning and shedding?

Genetics

Even when hair loss “runs in the family,” it does not automatically mean we are powerless. The field of epigenetics exists largely to help us understand that genes are not destiny. Our environment, nutrition, stress levels, sleep, inflammation, hormones, metabolism, and lifestyle all influence how genes are expressed.

In other words:

Genetics may load the gun but environment and physiology often help determine how strongly it fires.

Stress (Both Physical and Emotional)

Stress is defined as anything that asks your body to adapt to maintain homeostasis. This is one of the most common contributors that can effect hair loss for months after a stressful event.

Poor sleep. Illness. Surgery. Undereating. Nutrient deficiencies. Chronic inflammation. Overtraining. Blood sugar instability. Major life transitions. Toxic relationships. Work Stress. Cramming for exams....etc etc etc!

The body perceives stress broadly and because hair is not considered essential for survival it is often the lowest priority whenso when the body is overwhelmed or under-resourced. Our bodies may shift energy away from hair growth toward more immediate survival needs.

This is one reason people often notice increased shedding after periods of burnout, illness, postpartum recovery, emotional stress, or major life events.

Hormones

Hair is highly hormone responsive.

Reproductive hormones like estrogen and progesterone influence cycles of hair growth versus shedding. Testosterone activity can influence follicle sensitivity in genetically predisposed individuals.

Stress hormones like cortisol influence inflammation, nutrient utilization, and overall physiologic resilience.

Thyroid hormones play an enormous role in metabolism and hair growth signaling.

Hormonal shifts during postpartum recovery, perimenopause, menopause, thyroid dysfunction, and chronic stress are incredibly common contributors to changes in hair.

Note: Synthetic and bioidentical hormones such as birth control pills, IUD's, HRT are a whooooole other blog but YES! They also contribute! You can combat this with naturopathic support to optimize hormone metabolism.

Blood Sugar and Metabolism

The hair follicle is one of the most metabolically active structures in the body.

Blood sugar dysregulation, insulin resistance, inflammation, and metabolic dysfunction can influence nutrient delivery, oxidative stress, hormone signaling, and follicular health.

The body thrives on stability and our hair is no exception!

Nutrition and Absorption

Hair requires raw materials: Protein provides the building blocks for healthy hair strands but growth and maintenance also requries minerals, healthy fats, antioxidants, and vitamins.

Nourishment is not simply about what goes into the mouth but also how much we are actually absorbing and utilizing!

Digestive health, inflammation, restrictive eating patterns, aging, medications, gut health, and chronic stress can all influence nutrient status. Many people eating “healthy” diets are still undernourished at the cellular level.

Note: For those using GLP's or any other method for significant weight loss this is something I recommend supporting with naturopathic medicine to prevent hair loss!

Aging and Oxidative Stress

Hair follicles age just like any other cell. Over time, cumulative oxidative stress influences how tissues repair, regenerate, and function. The hair follicle requires protection from damage to continue to produce healthy hair. This is where scalp health becomes monumental!

Aging doesn't mean inevitable decline. It just means our bodies need greater support over time.

Naturopathically speaking there are many ways to combat aging of the cells. I'm not in the business of longevity medicine to LOOK or FEEL young forever, but to support my patient's systems in aging gracefully and being balanced.

Environment

Hair exists within the larger ecosystem of the body.

Environmental exposures, chronic inflammation, toxin burden, smoking, poor sleep, stress chemistry, and modern lifestyle factors all influence cellular health over time.

Our bodies are constantly responding to the information we give them...hair responds too!

A Final Thought

Not all hair loss fits neatly into these categories.

Autoimmune hair loss, scalp conditions, medication related shedding, fungal overgrowth, scarring, psoriasis, etc often require additional investigation and personalized care!

But one of the most important lessons I’ve learned is this:

Hair loss is rarely “just hair.” The body is often communicating something deeper. When we listen closely enough, we can often support meaningful improvement.

I work with patients privately ALL THE TIME to help restore hair growth while supporting the bigger picture of balanced health.

Though it doesn't fit every picture, I often use Nutrafol in conjunction with other remedies and lifestyle/nutritional changes and have had some great success stories that I'll share in the future.
